During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
